Indigenous group responds to claims

Date posted: 19 May 2010

A group of young Aboriginal people have hit back at claims that violence and a lack of respect in Cabarita is representative of the area's whole Aboriginal community. Such claims were made by Forster Film Festival director Greg Smith, who had been in consultation with Minimbah elders to produce a series of films targeting alcohol/drug abuse and domestic violence. The comments don't represent the Forster and Tuncurry Aboriginal community, particularly a new movement of young Aboriginal people, the group of young Aboriginal people say. They want more good stories to be heard about their community, otherwise there is a risk that negative stereotypes about Aboriginal people will be reinforced.
