Indigenous Engagement Officer Djapirri Mununggirritj helping to build positive change in Yirrkala

Date posted: 21 October 2013

As a part of the Australian Government's Stronger futures in the Northern Territory bill, many communities in the Northern Territory have employed an Indigenous Engagement Officer (IEO) who listens to community members and reports back to the government on matters that affect the community.

Yirrkala woman, Djapirri Mununggirritj has been an IEO in her community since January 2013, and believes that the role of the IEO is a very important one:

'Through the program I can see there is a partnership between my community and the Australian Government working together to build a stronger future for Yirrkala', Djapirri said.
