New research shows that most diabetes sufferers will develop diabetic eye disease

Date posted: 9 October 2013

New research by the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute and the Centre for Eye Research Australia, shows that almost all people with type 1 diabetes and 60% of people with type 2 diabetes will develop some form of diabetic eye disease within 20 years of diagnosis.

The report Out of sight - a report into diabetic eye disease in Australia also found that up to 50% of diabetic Australians do not undergo eye examinations at the recommended minimum frequency of every two years. Currently an estimated one million Australians suffer from diabetes, and this number is expected to double by the year 2025.
