Campaign highlights the impact of RHD to mark World Heart Day

Date posted: 27 September 2013

To mark World Heart Day on 29 September RHDAustralia are reminding people that rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is preventable, by highlighting one of the many stories of young Indigenous Australians who have undergone multiple heart surgeries as a result of the disease.

At age 13, Carlisa Willika from the Werenbun community north of Katherine in the Northern Territory has lived with RHD for the past five years, and has undergone four major heart operations, has a mechanical heart valve, and has to have penicillin injections every day for the rest of her life.
