The Pilbara Regiment is collaborating with Private Kimberly Lupton (a member of the Army Indigenous Strategy Steering Committee, and other Indigenous members of the regiment, to implement the Army Indigenous strategy (AIS). The AIS aims to improve Indigenous recruitment and retention, contribute to the development of Indigenous communities and enhance cultural awareness within the Army.
Lieutenant Colonel Perry Gunder is excited about the opportunities that the AIS may bring to the unit and the region, stating "the Army is committed to supporting the approach to Closing the Gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians by striving for an integrated workforce, cultural diversity and encouraging Indigenous communities to be a contributor to Army capability".
