Tom Brideson is a Kamilaroi man who was born in Gunnedah, New South Wales (NSW). Since 2007, Tom has been employed in the role as NSW State-wide Coordinator of the Aboriginal mental health workforce program and is located in Orange, NSW. Tom has a broad interest in areas that require improvements for Aboriginal people including health policy development, social and emotional wellbeing, clinical mental health care, suicide prevention, and educational matters across these areas.

Tom has worked in the area of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health and social and emotional wellbeing for over 20 years, including NSW and Commonwealth Government positions. Between 2005 and 2011, Tom was also a Program Leader for the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health in the Social and emotional wellbeing program. Between 2011 and 2012, he was a member of the first National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention Advisory Group and was appointed to the NSW Suicide Prevention Ministerial Advisory Committee.

Tom has published articles on issues facing the Aboriginal mental health workforce and the NSW Aboriginal mental health workforce program. Between 2002 and 2004 Tom was the Project Director of the Djirruwang program at Charles Sturt University. During this time Tom co-authored the clinical handbook and course competency document for the Djirruwang program and incorporated the National practice standards for mental health workforce 2002 to ensure program graduates acquired knowledge, skills, and qualifications equivalent to other professional groups working in mental health and human services.

Currently Tom sits on a range of local, state, and national committees that are relevant to the mental health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people. He is the current Chair of the Aboriginal Advisory Committee for the NSW Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health as part of Newcastle University, and is a member of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet's Social and Emotional Wellbeing Reference Group. Since 2007, Tom has been a member of the Management Committee of The Mental Health Services Conference (TheMHS) and convened the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health, Summer Forum in 2008.

In late 2012, Tom was appointed to the Board of Indigenous Allied Health Australia. In 2013, he was appointed to the Community Advisory Council of the NSW Mental Health Commission and was also appointed as a member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Advisory Group.
