Biography

Dr David Scrimgeour is the Medical Director at Spinifex Health Service, as well as a public health physician and general medical practitioner. He is also a representative on the committee of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.

Prior to commencing at Spinifex, David was a Public Health Medical Officer with the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia (SA), the peak body representing Aboriginal community-controlled health services in Australia. This role included providing public health advice and support to Aboriginal health organisations operating within SA in a primary health care context. David has worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in various parts of Australia over many years, particularly in remote areas, and assisted with the development of comprehensive primary health care services. David has also worked in international health in Africa, Asia and the Pacific.

David’s particular interests lie in Aboriginal health policy, within the broader framework of general Aboriginal policies, and also in the integration of disease-specific or body-part-specific programs within comprehensive primary health care.

In 2009, he was awarded an Order of Australia for his work in health service development and public health research in remote areas of Australia.
