Haylene Grogan has been appointed as Senior Director of Queensland Health's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Strategy Unit (ATSIHU). Haylene, a staff member of ATSIHU in the 1990s, left Queensland Health to work in the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs in 1999. She then worked in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet's Social Policy Unit, and went to the Department of Health and Ageing in 2001. She rose to the position of Assistant Secretary and has been the department's State Director of Indigenous Health for five years.

Haylene commenced her new position with Queensland Health in early October. 'It's nice to be back with Queensland Health and I'm Haylene Grogan takes up new role particularly looking forward to the challenges of my new position,' she said. 'A lot has changed since I left and I'm hopeful that the new directions we're taking will deliver improved health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,' she said. 'While in many ways it feels that I've never left, I have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of change in the ATSIHSU and the elevation in profile of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health within the mainstream program areas.' 'I'm keen to build on the current momentum and to harness the willingness of senior staff to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. The welcome back by Queensland Health staff has been overwhelming.'
