Biography

Winthrop Professor, Sandra Thompson, is Director of the Western Australian Centre for Rural Health and Professor of Rural and Remote Health at the University of Western Australia (UWA).

Sandra has worked in the health industry for over 20 years and has a strong background working in communicable disease control. She has worked in a variety of roles including as a Medical Practitioner Laboratory-based Researcher; Public Health Researcher and Epidemiologist; Manager and Public Health Practitioner.

Sandra is a board member and past Chair for the Australian Rural Health Education Network, and Chair of Rural Health at the University of Western Australia (UWA). She also heads the Combined Universities Centre for Rural Health in Geraldton, WA. 

As a public health physician, Sandra has particular research interests and expertise in the areas of communicable disease control; prevention and management of chronic disease; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health; health services research; quality improvement; and mental health. She also has a strong interest in community-capacity building and workforce issues.
